The forgotten perks of the Facebook News Feed Eradicator

“Procrastination is like a credit card: it’s a lot of fun until you get the bill.” — Christopher Parker

When there’s a difficult task ahead, sometimes we remain too laid back for our own sake. There’s always tomorrow, right? Unfortunately, when time starts ticking, our attitude often changes from calmness to stress.

If an important report is due tomorrow, or you have to submit a thesis next week there is no time to kick back and enjoy the pleasures of mindless activities. The work is not going to do itself. Thus, you have to gather your attention, focus, and get it done today. As said by Janet Dailey:

Someday is not a day in the week.

But how to avoid all the temptations that are telling us otherwise?

Social media — the procrastinator’s playground

During my university years, social media was already a big thing. There was Facebook, Reddit, Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube, and many other media outlets competing for their users’ attention. Fortunately, I didn’t use most of them, but I had trouble staying off YouTube and Facebook. As Craig Coelho said:

“I’d rather check my Facebook than face my checkbook.”

And that was causing problems for me… Thus, I came up with a solution.

To avoid all the mindless scrolling that I was partaking in, I began using a Chrome extension called the News Feed Eradicator, which vanquished my Facebook News Feed and replaced it with a new quote every time I log in.

What a relief!

Of course, my desire to check up on my friends or “look for inspiration” while I was working did not disappear in a day. Nonetheless, whenever I tried to open my News Feed, I could only see something similar to this 👇

Back to present

Although many years have passed since I graduated from university, I still use the Newsfeed Eradicator to this day. It helps me maintain my focus while I am working and saves me precious time when I am not.

Once I know there is nothing to scroll, I simply don’t. If you are an avid procrastinator just like I was, this Chrome Extension might prove useful for you too! Remember:

“If you’re not the customer — you’re the product.”

Things don’t often come for free. Social media is a lot of fun, but it is also a place where people make money from selling products, while the platforms themselves earn from selling ads. Otherwise, how would social media companies gain profit?

Of course, I am not saying that you should quit social media altogether even though many people make this claim, and they have their reasons. For me to say so would be hypocritical. Instead, I suggest taking some of the control back into your own hands. As said by Prince Rogers Nelson

“Technology is cool, but you’ve got to use it as opposed to letting it use you,”

And it’s hard not to agree otherwise.
