“If you really want a woman to love you, then you have to dance. And if you don’t want to dance, then you’re going to have to work extra hard to make a woman love you forever, and you will always run the risk that she will leave you at any second for a man who knows how to tango.”

Somewhat a year has passed since I and my girlfriend Marija have begun dancing Tango. What a ride! Never had I guessed that this dance would almost break us apart not just as a dancing couple, but also as partners. Fortunately, that did not happen. On the contrary, it has strengthened both of the bonds, bringing us closer together.

“Tango is a truth drug. It lays bare your problems and your complexes, but also the strengths you hide from others so as not to vex them. It shows what a couple can be for each other, how they can listen to each other. People who only want to listen to themselves will hate tango.”
Nina George

Like most things in life, Tango is a form of communication. It teaches you how to lead and when to follow; how to be firm and when to appear soft. It is one of those environments where a man does not have to shame himself for being a leader, and the woman can relax without bearing a single doubt in mind, for she trusts that her partner knows where they are going and has things under control.

Listening is also a big part of dancing tango. One should not only hear the music but also listen to what his or her partner’s body is trying to say. “Is she well placed on her feet? Where is her weight? Which of her legs is ready to move? Should I attempt this move, or rather be more simple in my approach?” — all these thoughts pass through one’s mind while on the outside it looks like two people are simply flowing on the dancefloor.

Of course, things don’t always go as well. There are times when you step on your partner’s foot. Other times you almost trip her or him over or bump into another couple. Yet, all of that is part of the process. All of that is tango.

For this reason, I want to congratulate all those who have decided to embark on the journey to master this difficult, yet very satisfying form of art. I hope that you will not lose your love for movement, dance, people, and subtle ways of communication.

Happy International day of Tango, and until we meet on the dancefloor!
